The days of these "Updates from the NICU" emails are numbered! We've been given an unofficial countdown of about 10-14 days until the girls can come home, and we couldn't be MORE thrilled with the amazing progress that Sage and Gemma have been making! Allow me to fill you in!
After a crash course in breast- and bottle-feeding, the girls decided that it was easy business and have started taking all their feeds by bottle or breast. This is relatively early for a baby that is 34-weeks-old (gestational age) and some of the nurses have been surprised with how much the babes are eating by themselves! They've caught on very quickly - you go girls! A few nights ago, Gemma pulled her feeding tube out herself - apparently she had had enough! And Sage's came out this morning. All this good feeding has led to a major growth spurt! As of today, both girls weigh 4 pounds, 6 ounces.
Growing and eating has led Gemma and Sage to be put on a low-flow oxygen support for a few days. Though they could prrroooobbabbly go without it, it's good that they don't have to output as much energy for simply breathing. The doctors explained it by saying that if we were running a long-distance race, we would require more oxygen by breathing faster and deeper. Essentially, the girls are running that long-distance race right now, and the best thing we can do for them at this time is help them out with extra air. Lungs don't grow as fast as their little bodies are growing, so we have to help them keep up a bit - and it's all okay...
Some of the most exciting news happened just today. Sage and Gemma have been regulating and maintaining their own body temperatures. They have started to store a little "baby-fat" and aren't dropping their temperature in room air. That being said, for two days their isolettes were open-topped. And just today, they have been moved to a crib where they can co-sleep! We have been waiting for this day for a long time! For the first time ever, I was able to see them side-by-side, faces facing me, in real life.
Besides all of this news, the girls' calendar has been booked the past week. They've had their first eye exams, which were found to be normal. Babies born premature have a higher risk of developing abnormal retinal growth, which in severe cases leads to blindness. This is all caused by early oxygen exposure; that is why preemie babies have strict guidelines about how much oxygen they can and cannot be processing during certain stages of age. Gemma and Sage have both been seen by the Occupational and Physical Therapists. So far their movements, positioning, and skills (like latching on and sucking motions) are developmentally appropriate. They still have a lot of physical developing to do, but it will all come in time.
Though it's not signed-sealed-delivered, we've been encouraged to "start preparing ourselves" and "make sure we have everything ready at home" from the NICU staff. Our car seats are here waiting for the babes, and we are taking our infant CPR class in a week. The girls have met most all of their requirements, we're just being patient as their Oxygen support is slowly weaned, day by day. We'll be sure to let you know when that happens. Keep thinking of us; keep praying for us; keep sending us your positive vibes and energy. The girls have come a long, long way in a matter of 35 days, and a lot of that comes from your support. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
